Sabre - an equine gladiator
'Sabre', 122cm X 92cm, acrylic on canvas, £1850 plus shipping
The pose of this horse reminded me of ancient murals depicting battle scenes with horses and soldiers. Sabre is rather like an 'equine gladiator' so I was after a certain look for this painting - an almost theatrical one. To create this effect, I painted the mane almost like a helmet, and his upper body by contrast, soft. He is rearing, so the strength lies in the lower part of his physique where his legs bear his weight. I used bolder hues and bigger shapes as a visual anchor. My decision to paint the background grey was a nod to classical paintings.
With each new work as a horse artist, I try to do something different and learn along the way.
